Job DescriptionOverview
Registered Nurse (RN) - Outpatient Gastroenterology Center
Department: Outpatient GI Center / Endoscopy
Floats to Main Hospital as Operationally Needed
Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Outpatient Gastroenterology Center provides comprehensive, patient-centered care across the full continuum of outpatient endoscopic services. This role is highly dynamic and requires cross-training to support multiple functions, including pre-operative preparation, intra-procedural circulating, technical assistance, scope reprocessing, and post-anesthesia recovery. The RN will also support operations at the main hospital as needed, ensuring continuity of care across settings.
Clinical Responsibilities
In this role, the RN delivers safe, high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing GI and endoscopic procedures. Responsibilities include conducting thorough pre-operative assessments, reviewing patient history and medications, providing education, initiating IV access, and preparing patients for procedures.
The RN also provides Phase II recovery care, including monitoring airway status, managing pain and nausea, supporting post-anesthesia recovery, and ensuring safe discharge processes. Ongoing patient assessment and timely communication with providers and anesthesia teams are essential to maintaining patient safety and positive outcomes.
Procedural & Technical Involvement
The RN actively participates during procedures by circulating and ensuring adherence to safety protocols, including patient and procedure verification. This role includes assisting physicians and anesthesia providers within scope of practice.
Additionally, the RN is trained to function as a GI technician, supporting procedure room setup, assisting during procedures, managing specimens, and ensuring efficient room turnover. The role also includes competency in endoscope cleaning and high-level disinfection in accordance with infection prevention standards and manufacturer guidelines.
Infection Prevention & Quality Assurance
A strong focus on infection prevention is central to this role. The RN maintains competency in manual and automated scope reprocessing and ensures accurate documentation of scope tracking, quality checks, and reprocessing logs. Adherence to regulatory requirements and GI best practices is critical to maintaining a safe patient care environment.
Team & Operational Support
This position requires flexibility and teamwork, including floating to the main hospital (GI, Endoscopy, or perioperative areas) based on patient care needs. The RN collaborates closely with physicians, anesthesia teams, technicians, and leadership to ensure efficient patient flow and a positive patient experience.
Participation in departmental education, competency validation, and quality improvement initiatives is expected, along with a strong commitment to IU Health values, patient safety, and professional nursing standards.
Qualifications & Skills
Candidates must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana (or be eligible) and maintain current BLS certification. Strong assessment, communication, and critical-thinking skills are essential, along with a willingness to cross-train across multiple roles within the outpatient GI setting.
Preferred experience includes GI, endoscopy, PACU, perioperative, or procedural nursing, as well as familiarity with moderate sedation, scope reprocessing, and endoscopy workflows. ACLS certification is preferred or must be obtained.
Work Environment & Schedule
This part-time position offers a consistent schedule of three 10-hour shifts per week with no weekends or holidays, supporting strong work-life balance. The role requires physical stamina, including standing, walking, and responding quickly in emergent situations, as well as flexibility to float based on operational needs.
Key Attributes for Success
Success in this role requires adaptability, a team-oriented mindset, and a willingness to learn and function across multiple responsibilities. A strong commitment to patient safety, infection prevention, and quality outcomes is essential, along with the ability to contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive work environment.
